Test 02

The first twixtor test was made in Final Cut, I then tried in AEFX, which seems to work better. I think the render engine is better overall.

This test led me on to also trying this guys symmetry, I think he's got one more masculine side and one more feminine side, you judge yourself.

Twixtor Test

I've been thinking about facial expressions while editing people that are about to smile, laugh or look surprised — every single frame says something, a sequence of frames or photographs, between two different types of emotions are interesting. It intrigues me how much emotion a face can communicate and I thought it could be fun to shoot some friends and slow down the footage with a plug-in called Twixtor; that blends frames, it makes up frames, (numerous action-sports photography tests on vimeo) so that something that's filmed @25 FPS can be slowed down by more than 95% but still plays smoothly, as if it's playing at 25FPS.

Anyhow, I had this idea of doing video portraits of friends and then treating the outcome with twixtor to give the viewer time to observe every detail of emotion, but wasn't sure if it'd work, so I tried it with some stock footage this afternoon, and it sure does seem to work. Test_02 is going to be in my mini studio at home with dedo lights and shot at 50FPS, to see how far i can stretch it...

The object could be viewing something on a screen and be targeted by 'surprises', prepared to provoke a natural, unexpected response, like throwing something or a loud bang or perhaps could the viewer be watching something on a monitor, perhaps showing the same content to a number of people to see the difference in reaction... anyhow the ideas are a bit all over the place at the moment, but I will structure it later. I've always found it interesting to observe the observer.

Fabric 58

I've just finished finished a video made for Fabric 58 — I pitched the idea to film inside Fabric, and was allowed in to shoot there - the first person ever allowed to film inside the club.

Here are some frames:

OFFF

I'm OFFF to Barcelona - yay!

Really looking forward to catch up with some friends and meet some new — get inspired again.

It's needed at the moment, been a bit much work lately, so looking forward to a break indeed.

Watch this space for reports on the festival.

Fabric video

So... I've just finished and delivered a video for Fabric

The mix combines 90's music with current music — 30 tracks featured in 60 minutes, so there was a lot of choice of audio for the video — almost too much!

I spent quite a lot of time to do the audio mixdown (which is where my old DJ skills had to come into practice, though I played Techno!), as I had to select 4-5 tracks out of these 30 — in a way creating my own mini-fabric-mix for my video.

I wanted to make a visual that shows both old school 90's and more current sounds, as is done in the mix by Jackmaster.

Basically: I like to stand in the space between two mirrors and look either left or right, or to look at a TV screen which is feeding from a camera - filming the screen and look into 'infinity'. BUT what I always found annoying is that I can't see beyond a certain angle — the angle you can view is the angle of what the camera is shooting.

I've experimented to try and do a similar thing by slicing the frames of footage in space and observing them from different angles with a 3D camera (through after effects) this is a technique I tried randomly 2-3 years ago when at college.

I can unfortunately not upload the video yet but here are some frames from the video:

Just flew back to London last night...

I went to Sweden for a holiday during the royal wedding, flew back last night which made this 5 minute TED talk extra relevant and inspirational

Holidays

Just came back from a week in the alps (val thoréns) AMAZING weather every day and great snow + great company. So many laughs and nice to see a place where everyone has a smile on their face. Really refreshing. I shot a few videos with my iphone while there, here is on from a after ski place at 2400m altitude called la folie douce.

Project TMead

Test from my shoot at Thamesmead. I am planning to make a conceptual shortfilm and learn some new techniques along the way such as tracking and integrating 3D and live-action.

Learning C4D

I've been learning dynamics and gravitation in C4D and it's pretty easy once you've got the hang of it.

I've been following tutorials by greyscalegorilla and other video's on youtube.

Leaving College - Getting a job!

So...

It has been a while. I have since last post, made the transition from student to employed designer.

I will create more posts in retrospect with photo's on what I've been up to at Kemistry (my workplace).

I was worried about not getting a job, especially due to the 'credit crunchy crisp' - sounds like a great cereal to me!

Anyhow. I did get a job through one of the two exhibitions I went to.

I was on trial for about 2-3 weeks and then asked if I could get a more permanent position with real salary. I did get an offer back about a week later in the beg of Aug. I then went to sweden for a week, for a short break.

I returned to London employed at Kemistry which I am still very happy about. The ground floor hosts a gallery of contemporary graphics art, illustration and for example - vintage broadcast design. The gallery is changing every 6 weeks, where the opening night is an event in itself with nice people and... free beer. Right in the heart of Shoredich.

Mr. Brown

I found this photo of Gordon Brown. He is not very popular right now. I've got an idea for a poster with Mr. Brown as the main character.

A day off

I have been doing some boring stuff today... sorting out my room and washing. I then relaxed by watching a couple of programs on the iplayer. One documentary on David Hockney was really good.. he's the most popular living British artist. Like how he combines hi-tech with tradition creating something new. The chinese said: To paint you need three things. Hand Eye and Heart. I believe it is the same for a designer/artist!

The other documentary was on William Egglestone. He was a great photographer capturing something interesting in mundane environments. He also seemed eccentric, really into his guns and woke up his kids in the middle of the night to keep the spontaneous haha, thought that was quite cool. Quite an opposite to the average parent.

His composition is intuitive.. I think I got intuitiveness in my photography as well, i've never really studied it on a formal level. I get a satisfaction by looking through a lens.. it frames what I want to focus on. I get a kick out of a nicely composed image and colour.

I want to know more about the art of storytelling too. . .

U.K Roadtrip

I just finished my degree with an exhibition at the RSA. Friends and family came down and it was nice to see everybody there. The night which was open to the industry was good as well. I met some companies and will now spend some days finding out who to work for/with.

Exciting times, . . I really believe there's a need for good motion designers. The future seems so exciting and I am so happy with my choice of course. It has been a great four years (foundation as well) and it was soo nice to find out that I got a 1st which is the highest grade. This is not something I will brag about but it is at least for myself; a proof that I've been ambitious with my work. It's not even work as such... it's more of a passion and I can keep on discovering and combining my different interests: music, interactivity, communication, meeting people design society and art. The technological advances matter too! Here are some pictures from our English mini-roadtrip

Designed in England. . . yes!
Think this is quite a good photo I took of my Dad. Us swedes are totally OK with wearing pink :)
Somewhere around the cornish coast line, perhaps Dartmouth area. . . we stayed one night in Brixham, I also found a village called Brixton... which was different to London's Brixton indeed. I saw loads of names on streets and villages that are already in London. . . what happened? Also stayed in Padstow, north of Newquay... really nice there.. reminded me of the Swedish westcoast which I strongly recommend.

Car problems? The rental car was leaking, but we figured out that it was condensation from the A/C.

A poor bird who couldn't fly properly because of a plastic bag, i'm myself using organic bags.

Ad - first version

Thinking about animating each object but the render time is unbearable. I need to just disperse the objects and make them integrate. Just like a shattered glass creates a pattern on the floor but in 3D-space.

Making Moenster Promo

I'm making the Mönster-promo in 1920x1080 resolution!

It's created by use of geometrical shapes. Triangles, squares and circles are ordered as in a 2.5D tetris-world where only grey exists. Several hundred shapes fly around chatoicly in space and develops into something ordered and breathtakingly beautiful in its own grey way.

Moenster has as a company itself developed into something more artistic and is at present moment protyped and developed towards installations and other creative forums where the product can be showcased.

Moenster isn't only a brand it is a way of seeing things.

no black.
no white.
only different shades of grey.

Mönster Shoot

This is what the studio set-up looked like after I set it up. I had my laptop, projector and camera next to the table. Then rolled the black paper out as flooring. One issue is that the paper is only 3 meters wide.
The strong light is from an external flash.

Thanks to Gibbe for modeling, Carl for collaborative art-direction and photographing and thanks to fashion graduate 2009 (unknown name) for lending us some excellent looking clothing.

Testing my idea for Panasonic brief

So. . . I was given a brief by Panasonic through my college and took it as my self-initated project. This self-initiated project is meant to be for you to explore anything within moving image. I thought about making a short-film but decided to pick a brief, in this case the Panasonic brief. I chose to work on this brief as I like technology companies and their products. My analysis of the brief tells me that they want to underline the fact that every part of their new G-10 TV is the hub of the 21st century home. The TV is the center of it all, where you can re-live memories and TV, Internet, Film.

The three elements (representend in RGB) Video, Still and Blue Ray DVD can be enjoyed on the G-10 with over 2m pixels, full-HD.

I wanted to play with lasers while exploring this brief. The reason being that I want to illustrate that "It's all connected". The idea is to build a set of mirrors that bounce lasers of each other to create a connection in the end, that being the symbolic for the TV.

The laser look is chosen because of trends and to speak to the target audience. TRON 2 is coming out in two years but is already hyped. This look is very much about neon colours, lines and lasers. It gives a futuristic look which is emphasised by a current film release: Star Trek.

Mönster Logo Development

I have been working on these 7 letter M Ö N S T E R for 2 days now. It was pretty easy to make them in the blue foam material. The surface need to be matte white though, for projections and shadows. The letters have been plastered with cast to cast shadows, relating back to the product - the 3D tile.

I think that the projection should illustrate what mönster is all about, creating shadows and depth. I will work an a moving line in after fx, animate it and complete all the letters by Thursday afternoon which is when the photoshoot will take place. Carl is working on the tiles and making them spotless for the shoot, weve also got a professional model at the shoot to interact with the tiles.

A little video test:
